Commencement

10 May

This past week one of my best friend’s Jasmine came in town on a break from medical school in Antigua (I have such dynamic girlfriends!) so we partied like rock stars all week. Practically every night  we were bottle poppin’ all over the District celeb style without a care in the world. It felt great to let my hair down but what felt the best was Friday night I stepped out in a dress I made myself. Vowing not to buy clothing this year has been pretty tough I’ll admit, but nowadays the few times I even walk into a retail store I don’t ever really see anything I want to wear. This weekend was Howard University’s Commencement and Friday night there is usually a big party for graduates and alumni so I went in an original piece that I drummed up in about three hours. I bought the material a few days before and had no idea what I was gonna do with it. All I had was a yard and a half of some mystery fabric and a zipper.

Influence by Jasmine’s new Caribbean tan I wanted to do something with an island influence. It’s funny you know…sometimes I get so frustrated and confused with life and my purpose and all that’s going on. I get so angry with God because I cant figure out what He wants me to be doing with my life. But Friday afternoon I realized just how blessed I truly am. To be able to dream something up, fashion it with your hands, and wear it somewhere is a blessing. So that evening when I donned my little Island girl dress I felt blessed; so blessed.

At Love Nightclub for the HU Commencement a few things may happen; you may see an ex, you may see your freshman year crush, you may see that girl who wanted to pledge your sorority and didn’t make it so she still has hard feelings. But one thing that is guaranteed;  you will see someone you haven’t seen in a while who will ask you “So what have you been up to?“. It felt great to tell everyone that asked that currently I am working on a clothing line. Without fail they all asked if what I was wearing was one of my pieces and I gave them an enthusiastic yes. I don’t know if it was all the champagne or the blessed feeling I had been walking around with all day but I was feeling good! I know I’ve been sewing for a while and making clothing for a while but it felt amazing to be among my peers, new HU graduates who would soon be taking over the world, my extremely accomplished med school homegirl, and feel like we were all of the same ilk. It felt like my commencement too.

exposed zipper, like the edginess of it all, fun print and tropical influence with a touch of rebel…reminds me of Lanvin’s exposed zipper work on dresses..definitely your commencement with this outfit!! kudos
